Windows 10 Enterprise Generic (KMS Client) Setup Keys: Full List
What is a generic KMS client key?
A generic KMS client key, also called a GVLK (Generic Volume License Key), is a public code published by Microsoft that tells Windows which edition to be set up as. It does not activate Windows by itself. It only sets the edition. Real activation still needs a genuine license, either through your organization’s own KMS server or a proper product key.
Think of it like a label on a box. The generic key tells your computer “you are Windows 10 Enterprise now,” but it does not prove you are allowed to use it. That proof comes separately, from your organization’s actual license.
The official Windows 10 and Windows 11 generic keys
This list comes directly from Microsoft’s own documentation and covers the current Semi-Annual Channel editions. The same keys work for both Windows 10 and Windows 11 because they share edition codes.

Windows Enterprise LTSC generic keys
LTSC stands for Long-Term Servicing Channel. These are special editions built for computers that need to stay unchanged for many years, like factory equipment or medical devices, so they skip the regular feature updates most computers get.

How to use a generic key to set an edition
Open Command Prompt as an Administrator, then type this command, swapping in the correct key from the tables above:
slmgr /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
This installs the key on your computer. If your computer is already connected to a genuine KMS server on your organization’s network, it should activate automatically after this. If it is not connected to one, the edition will be set, but Windows will still show as not activated until it can reach a real KMS host or a genuine product key is added.
Important things to know before using these keys
- These keys only work for volume licensing setups. They will not work on a retail copy of Windows bought from a store
- Using a generic key does not skip paying for a license. Your organization still needs a real, paid volume licensing agreement for the activation to work
- These keys are the same for everyone. They are published publicly by Microsoft, not secret or stolen codes
- IT teams commonly use these while setting up new computers, before applying the school’s or company’s real license
Frequently asked questions
Will a generic key activate Windows 10 Enterprise for free?
No. A generic key only sets the edition. It does not activate Windows without a genuine KMS host or real license behind it.
Are these keys safe and legal to use?
Yes, Microsoft publishes them publicly for this exact purpose. Using them is safe. What matters legally is that your organization still holds a genuine volume license to actually activate against.
Can I use a generic key on my personal home computer?
You can install the key to change the edition, but it will not activate without a genuine volume license or KMS host, which most home users do not have. For a personal computer, a regular retail or Store-purchased key is the right choice instead.
Do these keys ever change?
Rarely, but Microsoft does update this list from time to time when new versions of Windows come out. Always check Microsoft’s own documentation page if a key here ever stops working.
